This half day seminar is designed for surface land personnel requiring an introduction to surface rights management in the acquisition and divestiture of operated properties. The course is also valuable to supervisors and managers in the area.
This seminar is designed to provide an overview of surface land issues in the acquisition and divestiture of operated properties. Topics include a sample checklist, lease and agreement conveyancing, well licenses and LLR review, transfers, easements and rights-of-way, transfer of caveats, road use agreements, notice to landowners and occupants, electronic processes in Crown dispositions and license transfers, and environmental approvals. The course is presented from an Alberta perspective, but much of the material and process is relevant to other jurisdictions.

Tracey Stock, P.Eng, JD, MBA
Tracey Stock has been in the energy sector since 1980 as an engineer, lawyer, and landman working with Imperial Oil, Texaco, Canadian Superior, Shell, Trans-Canada Pipelines, Norcen, Petro-Canada, Talisman, Apache, Penn West, Pengrowth, Plains Midstream and Cenovus. Tracey delivers courses, seminars, and workshops to colleges, universities, professional and industry organizations including APEGA, CAPL, CAPLA and the Legal Education Society of Alberta. His experience includes petroleum engineering, corporate and commercial law, petroleum land negotiations and administration, and information systems management. Tracey is a part-time AER Hearing Commissioner. He also teaches business law, management, and MIS at Mt. Royal University and intellectual property law and information systems management in the MBA program and survey law in the geomatics engineering department at the University of Calgary. He has several published articles dealing with current land and legal issues in the petroleum industry. He is engaged in the community supporting youth and disadvantaged Calgarians. in 2017, he received the Summit Award for Community Service from APEGA and the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers from the Governor General of Canada.
