This seminar is directed towards members of industry with 5 or more years experience and is intended to summarize all facets of surface rights within the oil and gas business. The seminar has previously been conducted in a full day session and is being ‘right sized’ for a half day seminar. That means the course outline will be amended prior to the seminar in the interest of time.

Instructor(s):

Rob Telford:

Mr Telford graduated from the University of Alberta in 1985, became a licensed realtor and Land Agent in 1988, and a member of the Appraisal Institute in 1989. During this time, his main area of practice has been Agriculture, Commercial, Oil and Gas Properties, and Land and Appraisal Litigation support, as both an Appraiser and a Landman.

He has been qualified as an expert in land, First Nations Traditional Loss, Appraisal, Planning and numerous compensation matters in the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench, The Energy Resources Conservation Board, Alberta Energy Regulator, Alberta Utilities Commission, The National Resources Conservation Board, Metis Settlement Appeal Tribunal, The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board, The Alberta Land and Property Rights Tribunal, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Geographic Areas include the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, and the States of North Dakota, Colorado, Idaho and Montana.

He has been actively involved with many associations, institutes, educational institutions and government boards including the Alberta Association of the Appraisal Institute, Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen (serving as president in 2008), American Association of Professional Landmen (Director 2008-2010), International Right-of-Way Association, University of Alberta, Olds College, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Mount Royal University, Municipal Government Board and the Real Estate Council of Alberta (serving as Chair in 2012). He is currently the President of McNally Land Services Ltd. and Telford Land & Valuation Inc.

Daron Naffin:

With a practice that is directed towards energy, environmental and regulatory law, municipal planning as well as expropriation and surface rights, Daron Naffin acts for oil and gas companies, municipalities, and utilities. Clients benefit from his experience with matters involving all aspects of energy facility applications. He is also involved in environmental matters, concerned with contaminated sites and Alberta Power projects. Daron appears before  the Supreme Court of Canada, all levels of the Alberta courts, the Alberta Energy Regulator, the Environmental Appeals Board, the Alberta Land and Property Rights Tribunal,  the Natural Resources Conservation Board, the BC Oil and Gas Commission, the BC Oil and Gas Appeals Tribunal, the BC Surface Rights Board, the National Energy Board and various municipal and expropriation tribunals.  Daron is a past president of the Alberta Expropriation Association, is a member of the IRWA, a member of CAPL and sat on the Disciplinary Hearing Panel Roster for the Real Estate Council of Alberta.
